This Saturday, October 1, is Art on the Avenue in the Del Ray section of Alexandria! I'm booth W189 and will be located on Mt. Vernon Avenue between Randolph and Raymond Streets. The festival begins at 10:00 am and runs until 6:00 pm and I hope to see you there. There is no admission fee and Mt. Vernon Avenue is closed during the festival so it's really easy to wander around looking at all the different vendors.

I'll have jewelry, greeting cards - including my holiday cards, notecards, postcards and original pen & ink drawings.

Social Media Consultation

Last week, I had a ono-on-one social medial consultation with Ray Sidney-Smith of W3 Consulting. It was awesome! In 45 short minutes, he gave me at least 3 pages of suggestions and ideas to act on. This is a fascinating field and I'm really enjoying learning how to set up and deliver my social media campaigns.

Picasso show at Virginia Museum of Fine Arts in Richmond, VA

I saw this show yesterday and think that everyone should go - when it leaves Richmond next month it goes to San Francisco. The pieces in the show are from the Musee National Picasso and are what he kept as part of his legacy - some are signed, there are completed drawings, sculpture and paintings as well as a lot of studies. It was just so inspiring to see so much of his work in one place and see how he played around with ideas in drawings and other mediums before making a painting.

One of my pieces, Frustration, was accepted into a juried show called "Embodiment" at The Soundry in Vienna, Virginia. I am thrilled to have one of my pieces accepted - I created five figurative pieces in my abstract style. My work was highly influenced by Tamara Lempicka because her figurative work is so seductive and stylized. I created five pieces as a mini-solo show to explore, visually, the process of finding and meeting someone special - frustration, relaxing, dreaming, epiphany, and love (and the stages aren't necessarily in this order). The reception is this Friday, April 8.

Art Carnage on March 26, 2011

Art Carnage last Saturday was great despite the call for snow. There was a bag piper, an interactive art performance and lots of cool indie crafters. As a result of that event, I sold one of my newest drawings, Automatic. This piece was an experimentation by me in matching straight lines with organic type elements inside the boxes - this is probably my third piece where I'm trying to figure out how to do a Chuck Close-type piece in my own style.

This past Saturday, I debuted my 14 new jewelry designs at Art Carnage and am just blown away by the great response!! Thank you to all who stopped by and shopped.

For 2011, I picked designs from my drawings that were more fashion leaning because the glass is small and faces in detail look best behind it. I hand highlighted each piece and for some I used different colors to shake things up a little bit. I also changed my process a little. Now I paint acrylic medium onto the paper after I glue it to the glass, then put a light layer of clear glue on it and follow that up with a light layer of polyurethene. This new process has speeded up the drying time for the polyurethene and let me make more necklaces in a shorter period of time.

Baltimore Craft Council show

Yesterday I went to the amazing Baltimore Craft Council show. So much high caliber craft but it was interesting to note a few trends - lots of crafters were using a bit of pointillism in their work. I saw this on glassware, hanging bronze pieces, and especially in jewelry. It gave the work instant texture and one jewelry artist designed a tool that enabled him to texturize metal so that it sparkled like a stone. Another trend I noticed was not only use of organic materials in work but creating organic materials, like leaves and flowers. There was so much to inspire me about this show and reminded me what could be possible if I let my imagination run wild.

This is a great article by the folks at www.evokad.com that I found on AdCandy (an extremely cool app on my iphone). Drawing isn't dead! So much great design is computer made but it is nice to know that good old pen (or pencil) to paper still rocks. When I'm at shows and I'm talking to people about my work, they are pleasantly surprised to learn that my drawings are made by me by hand and aren't lithographs or prints. I totally agree with this article that an original, one-of-a-kind illustration can give a design piece so much more pizazz. The next time you have a logo, postcard, greeting card, poster or other design project, think of me and all the other illustrators for the art portion. You never know - it could be just what was missing.

I read in the Greeting Card Association news section (click here to read the article) that people are writing more letters. This is great for our industry because it proves that although email is wonderful, it's always nice to send and receive written notes. I enjoy writing out my holiday cards by hand - it's a nice gesture and is more personal. This is also a good excuse to practice my penmanship -- remember when we had to practice writing cursive on large lined paper and it seemed so difficult to shape a capital "S"? Here's to improved penmanship and reaching out to friends and family!

I've got new Valentine's Day cards and I''m so excited to finally be able to show them to everyone!!

My first show of the season is coming up at the end of this month - Art Carnage 316 at The Soundry in Vienna, Virginia. This will be my first evening art festival and I believe it will be a great event for vendors, performers, and everyone who comes to see what's going on! Here is how the Soundry describes it, "ART CARNAGE 316 - Indie Art Market meets the Carnival Train - Last Saturday NIGHT of every Month from 8pm-12am. Each month Art Carnage books a variety of entertainment including musicians, comics, poets, rappers, mimes, jugglers, dancers and other talented people to infuse their magic into this unique event."

If you can't make it to Art Carnage, I have my jewelry and orginial, one-of-a-kind notecards for sale at Ellipse Fine Crafts - they're located on the 2nd floor of the Ballston Mall next to Macy's Furniture. Their hours are 10am to 9pm Monday through Saturday and 12pm to 4pm on Sunday.

Next weekend, December 10, 11, and 12, I'll be participating in the Sugarloaf Craft Festival in Chantilly, Virginia at the Dulles Expo Center. I am booth 507 which is in an isle near the door and the festival hours are 10am to 6pm on Friday and Saturday and from 10am to 5pm on Sunday. The theme for the show this year is whimsical and since my art fits that description, I am one of the featured booths for the show! This is a fine art show, so I will have my original pen & ink drawings (both matted drawings and some large unmatted drawings), cards, and magnets.

This Saturday I will be debuting more printed cards from my greeting card line at Fenton Street Market in Silver Spring, MD. I have about 10 different Happy Birthday cards and several anniversary and graduation cards so far. All the artwork, text, and design is done by me. When I decided to create a line of greeting cards it was difficult to figure out what to say until I let the drawings speak for themselves because the faces are very expressive and they do look like they want to speak.

I'm in a group show at The Soundry in Vienna, Virginia called "Biketastic" which will benefit Bikes for the World. The theme is about biking and I submitted my piece called "Thinking of Biking" which I drew shortly after I got my bike and I was spending a lot of time figuring out where I wanted to go... exploring. Getting around on bike is really fun and I prefer running my errands this way instead of riding the subway or bus. The show runs from July 31 through August 28 with a reception beginning at 7:00pm on Saturday, July 31. See my piece here.
